Computer Essentials for Job Seekers : Email 101

Tomorrow morning I begin the first section of a four part library instruction program at the Skokie Public Library entitled “Computer Essentials for Job Seekers.” The purpose of these courses will be to teach Skokie residence general the basic computer skills necessary to apply for a job online or at an employeer with an application kiosk.

I believe that library instruction, especially digital/technical literacy, is increasingly important. According to a recent ALA report:

A growing number of U.S. employers are recruiting online.
Nearly three-quarters (70 percent) of the top 100 U.S. retailers accept online applications for hourly positions, up from 41 percent in 2004, and 16 percent only accept online applications, according to a 2006 study from Taleo Research, which analyzes best practices and economics of human resources management.

class will be structured in three segments. I plan on covering the lecture/slide fairly quickly, then do some on screen examples, and finally open up the floor to lab time. I actually hope to have most of the class reserved for hands on lab time for the students. Hopefully this will relieve any anxiety they may have related to technology and allow them to interact with the technology at an intimate level.
