Philosophy
It is the modern librarians duty to deliver this information and engage with our user community using all appropriate technology available. As a profession we must strive to bring Access, Education and Lifelong Learning, Diversity, and Service to all library patrons.
Access
Information literacy and helping to close the digital divide must be part of the professions ideology. All material in the library should be available for use for all users. Those who need assistance with information literacy should be able to find that assistance in the library and know that librarians are there to assist them with any and all information needs.
Education and Lifelong Learning
I believe in striving to make the library an integral part of the community, somewhere that people feel connected with and look forward to visiting. The library should provide the best service possible throughout the life of a patron. From infancy to old age the library must connect with its users and engage them with the information products available.
Diversity
The library must be available for all users of the community. The library must constantly strive to serve all users, and potential users, through outreach and inclusion of a wide variety of information products. In addition to varying languages, genres, and types of material the library must strive to accommodate people with disabilities. OPACS should be designed for use by those whore visually impaired and the library space itself must accommodate those with mobility issues.
Service
The librarian should be fully aware of the information environment that they create through the physical layout of the library, book displays, OPACS, virtual services, and other informational products. These environments should be constantly monitored and adjusted to provide the best service to the user community. The librarian of the future must make the library relevant to their user community, changing the library from a place they visit rarely to an organization that they are involved with 365 days a year. This type of outreach can be accomplished with social media, marketing, information literacy sessions, and engaging programming.
